Tights Magic

Tights Magic

Tights belong to most common and widespread heritages of XX century. Being so widely used all over the world, in so wide range of occasions, their history refers to the story of previous century and many political, social and cultural changes that occurred during that period.

First tights appeared in 20-es, perfectly matching free and rebellious spirit of after-the-war world. The First World War broke the most social rules and cliches into pieces. Being in factories and in fight, seeing so many deaths and devastation, women realized that they're no more obliged to follow strict moral rules. Tights were just the perfect match for this cheerful time, discreetly accentuating sexuality and seduction of woman's legs, uncovered for the first time in European civilization.

During 30-es, silk tights has dominated the silver screen, becoming a part of some unforgettable and eternal fashion archetypes. (Just remember The Blue Angel.) But 40-es brought a revolution – nylon! Nylon tights became ultimate must-have in all classes. However, back then they were nor inexpensive neither easy available.

With The Second World War, the dark days for nylon tights approached. Nylon industry was redirected towards parachute and rope production, and Europe suffered from tight shortage. Women of that time had a little trick – in lack of tights, they draw seams on their legs to make them look they were wearing them. Besides, times weren't easy and torn tights weren't thrown away. Up to late 50-es, there were tiny tights sewing machines, and the ladies could get their dream pieces repaired.

Fifties meant a revolution in tight industry – DuPont invented lycra, that could add stretch to nylon. The fit and comfort of hosiery were greatly improved. It also meant introducing seam-free stockings to the market. Further to the sixties, tights industry went along social and cultural shifts. It was British brand Pretty Pole who brought hold-ups to the market, getting rid of suspender belts and the bulges they made. Before long, Pretty Pole became the number-one hosiery label in the UK. The most revolutionary invention of the sixties was the advent of one-piece tights as they are today. Models and girls needed a piece of clothes that would be in harmony with mini skirts.

Seventies were the time of experiments with motives and colours. Whether they were patterned, printed with flowers or displaying a tumultuous use of colours, in 70-es even the tights could be used as a form of self-expression.

Fishnets had a rebound during late 70-es and early 80-es, becoming a tights style of choice for punk rockers. As the rest of the clothes, tights in 80-es were marked by neon colors and weaved patterns. Nineties led to a grunge romantic – knitted, ripped retro tights were on top during mid-90-es. On the other side, neon colors, abstract patterns and lace continued to dominate fashion of this decade. Noughties brought more serious approach, forwarding dark opacity as the main trend in the beginning of the 21 century.
